Dear ISTAT colleagues, This message ﬁnds me drying out from the Paris Air Show where the weather this year was a tad too wet even for a guy living in rainy Seattle! Fortunately we got some relief the evening of our annual ISTAT Air Show Reception. In attendance were more than 900 members plus their guests, which pushed our crowd to more than 1,100. Despite the downpour, it was a great success and we heard many times the comment that it was “the place to be” to maximize the chance to see colleagues attending air show week. We also heard that we should consider moving our next Paris reception closer to downtown, which would make coming and going easier, and we’re adding that to our board agenda. As always, the air show itself was an industry sight to behold. My impression was that crowds this year were less than in the past, maybe due to the dismal weather. But signs of the industry’s current prosperity were all over—lots of orders for Airbus’ A320neo, healthy business being done for new widebodies, and a strong product showing by the manufacturers, including ﬁve new Boeing airplanes on hand and a visit from Sukhoi’s new Superjet 100 among others. While the air show experience can be exhausting, it’s a great reminder that it’s hard to ﬁnd a business more inherently global than aviation. Airplanes unite people, and safely and efﬁciently span great distances unlike any other mode of transport. And as you’ll see in the story on the latest Current Market Outlook, the world market is getting larger for the products and services that those of us in ISTAT provide. The industry view as seen from the ISTAT perspective is also increasingly global. The Paris reception provides our growing international membership with a gathering place at our industry’s largest annual trade event. We supplement that with our own international meeting each spring, along with the yearly ISTAT Europe event in the fall and, this year, our ﬁrst ISTAT Asia conference in Beijing. ISTAT is realizing its ambition to be “the” industry association serving global commercial aviation, and it’s great to be part of that experience! Speaking of our ISTAT Europe 2011 event, the Barcelona conference on 18-20 September is shaping up to be another global success. We have 877 hotel rooms already spoken for as 25 July. Hopefully by the time you read this, you’ll be among those accommodated and on your way to our latest global gathering. I hope your summer holidays were enjoyable and that we’ll see you in Barcelona very soon!
