It also filled the gap left by Boeing’s discontinuation of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-90 after Boeing’s merger with McDonnell Douglas. The -800 was launched by Hapag-Lloyd Flug in 1994 and entered service in 1998. The B737-800 seats 162 passengers in a two-class layout or 189 in one class and competes with the A320. For many airlines in the U.S., the B737-800 replaced aging B727-200 trijets and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-90 series aircraft. It is the most popular model of Boeing’s very successful 737 series, with more than 1,100 units currently in service. At the end of August 2008 there was a delivery backlog of almost 1,500 (and growing) aircraft, and as a result, Boeing has been able to obtain premium prices in this competitive market area, not quite achieving the $70m-$80m list price, but better than the deep discounts endemic for this class aircraft. Additionally, Boeing offers a business jet version, of which there is a small backlog.
