Of the delivered/on order fleet, 182 aircraft are Rolls-Royce Trent 700-powered with 19 operators (A330-340), 96 are PW4000-powered with 13 operators (A330-320), and 71 are General Electric CF6-80E-powered with eight operators (A330-300). 28 aircraft are yet to have the powerplant type chosen. There are 36 airline operators with aircraft in service/on order. Cathay Pacific is the most prominent operator with 40 Trent 700-powered aircraft in service/on order. AirAsia X has 25 -300s on order and one in service; Northwest Airlines has 21 in service; and Thai Airways International has 12 in service and eight on order. The most prominent area of in-service/on-order A330-300s is found within the Asia/Pacific region with 223 aircraft (59 percent of the fleet total) followed by Europe (16%/62 aircraft), the Middle East (13%/48), North America (11%/40) and Latin America/Caribbean with four aircraft. We expect the A330-300 to continue as a major player, especially in the intra-Asian market for the next 10-15 years, notwithstanding the introduction of the newer technology B787-9 and A350-900, both of which are targeted at the longer range markets but may start to impinge on the A330. We expect the A350 to eventually replace the A330 on the production line in the middle of the next decade. A freighter conversion program is likely, as the A330-300 could make a good longer term, higher volume replacement for the A300600, complementing the new build A330-200 freighter. EADS-EFW is targeting the middle of the next decade as a possible launch period. The type is particularly concentrated in the intra-Asian market where it complements the Boeing 777. Singapore Airlines’ decision to take aircraft on lease from Airbus as an interim solution to its capacity requirements again demonstrates that the type is well suited to those markets. AirAsia X has selected the type to develop its long-haul, low-fare services.
