Jetrader - November/December 2008 - (Page 25) ISTAT foundation With summer behind us, the Foundation committees are hard at work finalizing the awards to be allocated among the Scholarship and Grants Programs. While the scholarship awards still have some way to go before being finalized, the grants awards were signed off in late September. Progress is good on all programs, and with the benefit of the generous giving earlier this year surrounding the ISTAT 25th Annual Conference we are able to again offer significant financial support to those in need and who have a career in aviation in mind. Your Foundation Trustee Board met in Chicago in September devoting time to strategize the future of the existing programs and discuss potential new programs. With the assistance of inhouse specialists SmithBucklin, we were able to refine our thoughts, and we are well positioned to make definitive proposals to the Foundation Board meeting scheduled to take place in New York in October. The main areas of discussion have centered on: • Scholarships — continue the excellent work of allocating scholarships to those in need but also continue to look at expanding scholarships in the post-graduate field • Grants — research more potential aviation educational programs that could benefit from grant awards. Also consider whether grant award recipients could come from the humanitarian sector (while still having an aviation angle). • Internship — consideration is being given to making the Internship Program an “extension” of the scholarship program. • Humanitarian — identifying and potentially building a program that our membership can identify as our own and uses the resources of our member companies, as well as the cash donations received into the Foundation. We are also reviewing the possibility of cooperating with other aviation-based foundations that have existing programs where ISTAT members could add value. A theme that echoes a significant trend of our industry in recent years has been discussed extensively and is gaining momentum, and that relates to vertical integration. The Foundation Trustees are considering whether significant benefits will be realized by the membership if the Scholarship, Grant and Internship Programs are integrated so that we all (including the award winners) benefit from the continuity of support via the various programs in producing wellrounded individuals who will be attractive hires for our membership. A common thread to all our considerations is to strengthen the international nature of all our programs. The October ISTAT Board Meeting (yet to happen as of this writing) promises to be a lively and exciting venue for the exchange of views and with the clear objective of coming to definitive conclusions on these matters. I am sorry that this year I was unable to attend the 15th European Conference and therefore was not as accessible to hear any observations and ideas that you may have in terms of the direction of the Foundation. But, I remain available to talk via telephone or e-mail, and I would be happy to receive any input you may have. Stephen Rimmer, Chairman ISTAT Foundation Jetrader 25
