LOGA Industry Report - Fall 2008 - (Page 15) Are you with me so far? I thought so. Follow me. I have a plan… Here’s where we start: Hollywood. No one could deny that entertainment is a vital industry. After all, what would our lives be without entertainment? Drudgery, pure and simple. A site on the web lists financial performance of the top seven return-on-investment (ROI) films of all time: 1. The Blair Witch Project: ROI 495,900% ($248 million gross on $50,000 investment) 2. Napoleon Dynamite: ROI 11,425% ($46.1 million gross on $400,000 investment) 3. Saw: ROI 8,483% ($103 million gross on $1.2 million investment) 4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding: ROI 7,260% ($368 million gross on $5 million investment) 5. Juno: ROI 2,033% ($160+ million gross on $7.5 million investment) 6. The Passion of the Christ: ROI 1,940% ($612 million gross on $30 million investment) 7. Good Will Hunting: ROI 1,280% ($138 million gross on $10 million investment) (Source: http://www.portfolio.com/ slideshows/2008/2/Top-ROI-Films) There’s gotta be at least a cool billion in tax revenue that Uncle Sam could pick up. Given their political leanings, I’m sure Hollywood won’t object; when you’ve got that kind of dough, who’s gonna miss a few million anyway? So, Mr. Obama, when will a Windfall Profits Tax on Hollywood become a centerpiece of your campaign?
