LOGA Industry Report - Fall 2008 - (Page 33) McKeithen Honored by PLANO Mineral Board Secretary Marjorie McKeithen was honored by the Professional Landmen’s Association of New Orleans (PLANO) at the group’s awards luncheon. She was presented the Betty Baronne Award for her work and service in promoting the oil and gas industry in the state. According to PLANO Vice President David Seay of Century Exploration of New Orleans Inc., the award recognizes a government official who has worked with petroleum landmen and given not annually, but when warranted. “We are all extremely pleased to work with Ms. McKeithen, who is very motivated and passionate about her work,” Seay said. Betty S. Baronne was a state Mineral Board employee who was known for her tireless efforts. The association established the Baronne Award in 1982 to honor a member of the federal, state, parish or city agency who provided its members public service beyond the routine duties of office. The organization of landmen in New Orleans was originally formed in 1953, and currently its membership is active in numerous educational, business and community affairs. Louisiana EPA Awards More Than $20 Million to LDNR for Whiskey Island Restoration Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $20,678,580 to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (LDNR) to restore and protect the marshes at Whiskey Island in Terrebonne Parish. The Whiskey Island Back Barrier Marsh Creation, TE-50 project will serve several functions including the creation of a back barrier platform on which the island can migrate approximately 300 acres of coastal habitat, a minimum of three one-acre tidal ponds, 5,800 feet of tidal creeks, approximately 13,000 feet of dune, and vegetation of the completed project with smooth cordgrass. Under the guidelines of the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act and in partnership with EPA Region 6, LDNR will implement projects that create, protect, restore and enhance wetlands in coastal Louisiana. Johnson, administrator for the U.S. Protection Agency, recently recognized the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality for its exceptional efforts within the Office of Environmental Services. Johnson recognized the state at an awards ceremony for National Environmental Performance Track members for its exceptional achievements in environmental stewardship. According to EPA, Performance Track membership has grown to more than 500 facilities in 49 states and Puerto Rico, and members have made more than 3,500 commitments to the environment. DEQ received special recognition for issuing air permits for Marathon Oil in an expeditious manner based upon the company’s exemplary environmental performance and Performance Track membership. The permit writers work within the Office of Environmental Services. “It’s an honor to be recognized on a national level,” said DEQ Secretary Harold Leggett. “Writing permits isn’t the most glamorous job, but it’s one of the most important tasks within the department. Louisiana is open for business, but not at the expense of human health and the environment. It makes good business sense to work closely with facilities that have environmental and business goals that are beneficial to the state.” The www.loga.la | 33 http://www.epa.gov/region6/gandf/index.htm http://www.epa.gov/region6/gandf/index.htm http://www.epa.gov/region6 http://www.epa.gov/region6/6xa/audio.htm#audio071808_whiskeyisland http://www.epa.gov/region6/6xa/audio.htm#audio071808_whiskeyisland http://www.loga.la
