Mechanical Piping Plumbing Journal 2008 - (Page 26) UPDATES from British Columbia continued Where is the Work? Vancouver/Lower Mainland Obviously, the 2010 Olympics are creating a large number of new projects in and around Greater Vancouver and Whistler. Infrastructure projects to support the games are also occurring. In addition, a brand new Vancouver Convention Centre and a number of high-end hotels are joining the downtown Vancouver skyline. While single-family housing continues to thrive in the suburbs, more and more we are seeing the “downtown lifestyle” of condominium living occurring, as well. Condos and multi-use building development con- tinues downtown and along important transit routes. A lot of provincial spending is occurring in upgrading health care and educational facilities, long term care residences and university infrastructure. Northern BC Much like the rest of the province, Northern BC is experiencing an incredible construction boom. There is a lot of industrial activity from gas and pipeline construction, but also quite a bit of institutional and commercial activity, as well. This trend is expected to continue for the next few years. Vancouver Island North The mid-to-North Vancouver Island region has seen a lot of construction activity in the past year, mainly consisting of multi family condos, townhouses, etc. There have been quite a few assisted living projects in this area, as well. Infrastructure is likely to be a key focus in the next year or two, with hospitals and schools being built and/or renovated. While the area has been generally busy, the slight downturn of recent months shows signs of picking up very soon. Vancouver Island South This region is continuing to thrive, with activity bustling in all sectors of residential and non-residential construction. This will likely continue for the next few years, and contractors in this area are definitely keeping busy. Okanagan/Southern Interior The Okanagan area continues to be brisk. While there is some slowdown and softening in the residence single family dwellings, the multifamily and commercial construction sectors are still in apparent high demand. As elsewhere in the province, manpower is one of the biggest concerns. Despite this, the next year looks to be a busy one in the Okanagan. 26 Mechanical Contractors Associations of Alberta, B.C., Manitoba & Saskatchewan 2008
