UP DATES from Manitoba Chimneys for Commercial Buildings: CALENDAR OF E VENTS T raditionally the sheet metal trades have supplied and installed chimneys in commercial buildings. In recent years problems have been encountered matching chimneys with gas and oil fired equipment, which often resulted in another chimney having to be supplied. A typical scenario would be in a situation where the specifications allow an approved equal or alternate to the specified appliance. The original and alternate equipment would be described fairly clearly in the specifications and the original chimney would too but not the alternate chimney. If the alternate or equal equipment was selected (usually by the mechanical contractor), the selection of the type of chimney could change. Occasionally, the problem would be discovered at the shop drawing stage and the sheet metal contractor would obtain the correct chimney. However, in many cases, the original chimney was purchased and installed only to discover that it was the wrong chimney. Extra cost resulted from having to purchase another chimney and the extra labour in having to remove the original. Consequently, the Manitoba Association of Sheet Metal and Air Handling Contractors of Manitoba (MASMAHC) requested, through MCAM, that mechanical contractors take on the responsibility of supplying the equipment and chimney as a package, thus minimizing cost and unanticipated delays to the project. The policy applies to all commercial and industrial chimneys serving boilers, generator exhaust and indoor air handling units. Since MASMAHC is represented on the MCAM Board of Directors, a close link is maintained between the two associations. The concerns of the sheet metal industry were brought to the attention of the Board and a solution was found that was satisfactory to both parties.
