That whole cycle can take five, six, seven years until you have a real seasoned project manager.” As a 40-year-old already boasting two decades in his industry, Cousins says he is a rare breed, as there is a big gap in the worker range of 40 to 50 years old. Most middle- to seniorlevel management, Cousins says, are 50-plus. It’s a trend in demographics which he says is common throughout the industry. Cousins, too, cites the CMCEF which he calls “a great, proactive way of educating. We use it, as well as some in-house training, and even some computer courses. The workforce is much more sophisticated today. And with a turnover and attri- tion of the older workforce, training is necessary,” Cousins says. Another company, Lockerbie & Hole, has helped build Canada since 1898. Today, it’s one of the country’s largest construction firms, providing services to the industrial, civil, municipal and institutional market sectors. The company’s experienced construction professionals offer expertise in a variety of areas, including: mechanical; electrical; instrumentation; construction of design build; module assembly; pipe fabrication; boiler erection; boiler maintenance; insulation; fireproofing; shutdowns; civil; and structural. Growing with Canada’s economic development for over a century, today Lockerbie & Hole has nine offices and fabrication facilities across the country and an average workforce of 2000. Thank goodness there is a push to further educate those interested in making a career in construction, says Doug Hill. A board member with MCA Alberta, and president of HVC Canada, Hill recalls when he graduated from high school, neither teachers nor guidance counsellors promoted the trades as a solid career choice. “Construction was almost a dirty word,” recalls Hill. “I entered construction because I was a secondgeneration worker. My father was in the business. He brought me up through the ranks. And today, at 43 years old, I am still young compared to my contemporaries in the business.” HVC Canada specializes in construction management of large electrical and mechanical installations. Additionally, it is an employee-owned organization dedicated to complete customer satisfaction. Incorporated in Alberta and operating throughout Canada, HVC is able to undertake projects of any size and complexity. Staffi ng is provided to meet the needs of each project.
