Senior staff has extensive construction management experience in a variety of market sectors, including: Petro Chemical; Health Care; and Airports. Additionally, construction management services included by HVC Canada are tailored to each project to meet specific objectives established by the client. HVC Canada, through its wholly owned subsidiary, HVC Construction, is able to provide direct hire construction craft labour to construct any size project. All labour is provided through local unions. HVC Canada has established strong relationships with all trade unions through the application of fair labour management policies and practices. All senior executives of HVC Canada have extensive experience in the negation of collective agreements. Membership in the Electrical and Mechanical contractors associations and the Construction Labour Relations of Alberta allows close contact with all stakeholders in the construction industry, keeping it informed of all industry and owner concerns. Hill says his journey to a management position began with a trade, through apprenticeship and later into management, which has proven to be “a very rewarding career,” one which more tradespeople should consider. However, he can’t stress enough the importance of education, including adult education. “The CMCEF offers some very good courses, for example the Project Management course that I have sent a number of my staff to — the younger guys. We can be our own worst enemy in this business,” cautions Hill. “Individual companies don’t want to lose their people, so they can become rather insular in protecting them. I find that to be a detriment, because some of the smaller companies don’t have in-house training — no formal training. “It’s always good to learn on the job,” continues Hill, “but I also think it helps to have formal education on top of that — the various CMCEF training courses, and courses offered at colleges across Canada.” How important is education to the development of management skills? Hill says his company is currently developing construction management to aid smaller businesses in becoming “a little more sophisticated, help them grow.” He says he anticipates an Alberta-based “severe shortage of middle management.” And this is the fear resting amongst many of today’s mechanical, piping and plumbing industry members. With HRSDC stating, management occupations are already facing pressures, and that more pressure rests on the horizon, now is the time to act. No doubt, education, further training – and a little luck – will go a long way towards replenishing the management pool.
