The Construction Forecasts Data, now online, allows for the customization of reports by obtaining data from any combination of trades, provinces and other variables. This unique industry planning tool delivers sound forecasting and planning data covering up to 10 years, in 31 major construction trades. With the Construction Forecasts, a user can determine the availability of a construction trade/occupation in labour markets across Canada. They can also generate customized tables and graphs on a broad range of selected categories within the sector, trade or province. As well, users can convert the data to any of a variety of chart formats. There are many benefits to using the Construction Forecasts. It eliminates the need to sift through reports and trade publications for hours, while providing you with rapid response to medium and long-term needs. Consistent labour market and economic information for all industry users helps in the preplanning process. As well, it provides a glossary, frequently asked questions and easy to follow guides and suggestions. According to Richard McKeagan, president of MCA Canada, “The labour forecasting is extremely important for the industry — and I’m talking about all aspects of the industry. Not only contractors, but the owners. In particular, they can gage when it’s timely to invest in projects, to get an indication of what the labour force will look like whenever they want to invest. And it also assists the industry in terms of addressing the needs of the industry for skilled trades. “Also, for the students who are looking at skilled trades, and perhaps more importantly, the parents. You can see what the trends look like for the next five to 10 years. Nowadays, they’ll probably come away with the attitude, ‘Hey, it looks like a very good occupation, particularly in western Canada, and it looks like we will be employed making very good money over the next decade or so,’” McKeagan adds. The CSC and its web-based information offer career awareness, which McKeagan says is good information for people looking for a career in, for example, plumbing. McKeagan mentions other initiatives involving MCA Canada. For example, he says the association is working with CSC on career awareness initiatives, particularly through the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC). As well, MCA Canada is going to get more involved with LMI, McKeagan says, and already some of the association’s members and association managers are involved in workshops and forecasting. There’s an important e-learning component of CSC, according to McKeagan. He cites two programs currently available to distributors. MCA Canada is a distributor of the Canadian Mechanical Contracting Education Foundation (CMCEF) e-learning programs. As well, programs involving Project Management, Pipeline Safety Training, Communications and Construction Law have all been developed by the CSC — and more are in the works. Visit the Construction Sector Council www.csc-ca.org, and the Construction Forecast Data www.constructionforecasts.ca to learn about their offerings and how they can help better individual and collective efforts in Canadian construction. 50 Mechanical Contractors Associations of Alberta, B.C., Manitoba & Saskatchewan 2008 http://www.constructionforecasts.ca http://www.csc-ca.org http://www.constructionforecasts.ca http://www.constructionforecasts.ca
