But you won’t find a better opportunity to pick up the knowledge, ideas and tools to improve your course management strategy than at the same place you’ll find resources for every aspect of your club’s facility – from the tee box to swimming pool, to the tennis courts to the clubhouse. Let’s focus on the golf aspect of the show. Ideally, you and your golf course superintendent should attend the GIS together with a clearly defined game plan. If that’s not possible, at the very least, spend some time with your superintendent beforehand to establish a better understanding of his or her priorities for managing your club’s course. Take your superintendent’s suggestions and perhaps even a product and equipment wish list with you as you navigate the show floor, taking time to stop and engage the appropriate vendors. When the two of you meet up again after the show – viola! You’re both on the same page, and decisions about equipment, N products, services and strategy improvements can be easily made and positive changes implemented. Remember – a game plan is key. While the show spans a total of 20 hours over the course of three days, wandering about aimlessly is simply not going to be the most efficient use of your time. There will be hundreds of exhibits and demonstrations in addition to the Solution Centers and the inevitable face-toface networking and on-site contacts you’ll make with fellow club industry professionals while navigating the show floor. In addition, courses and seminars offered by GCSAA, NGCOA and CMAA both during the show and on separate schedules cover all aspects of facility management, not just agronomic concerns. Seminars will cover a wide range of topics in the categories of resource utilization, operations management, communication, leadership and personal skills – all areas that help improve a facility’s bottom line. The GIS will start with a General Session featuring master storyteller Doug Keeley and his presentation, “The Mark of a Leader,” in addition to the USGA Green Section Education Program,“Taking Care of Business: Opportunities to Enhance Facility and Professional,” which will feature information on customer service and club success. The day also includes the Disney Institute’s “Service Excellence: Taking the Golf Experience to the Next Level,” an interactive presentation that shows proven services strategies and tactics that are directly applicable to the golf industry and relevant to internal and external customers. With so many choices in events, exhibits, networking and educational opportunities, no two attendees will take away the same lessons from the GIS, but each will realize great returns for themselves and their facilities. Just the opportunity to learn from fellow mangers, owner/operators or superintendents is well worth the expense and time away from your club.
