Mike Gardner, former regional director for the Sunshine region of the Florida Chapter of CMAA, has become general manager of River Run Country Club in North Carolina. Michael Ambrose, CCM, who served as River Run’s general manager/chief operating officer for six years, moved to the Georgia coast to prepare for retirement. The Georgia Chapter of CMAA recently held its annual 2007 Peach Classic. Proceeds from this event assist the chapter in funding scholarship programs, supporting its student chapter and the School of Hospitality at Georgia State, providing and expanding on the high quality of educational programs available to members, and sponsoring initiatives and programs on timely matters such as water conservation. This year the Georgia Chapter of CMAA partnered with the Atlanta Chapter of the American Culinary Federation (ACF). For the ACF’s efforts, the Georgia Chapter of CMAA presented the Atlanta ACF a donation check for $5,000 for its charitable cause “USO-Operation Chefs Unite.” Operation Chefs Unite feeds our armed forces and their families as they arrive home or depart for duty through Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Ford Franklin joined Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, on Oct. 1 as Vice President - Finance. Most recently, he was director of finance & accounting for The Ritz Carlton Golf Club & Spa and RitzCarlton Private Clubs of Jupiter, Florida. Ford holds an Executive MBA from Georgia State University and an undergraduate degree from Empire State College, Saratoga Springs, New York. Thorston Loth also joined Ocean Reef Club as Executive Director of Operations. Loft brings with him a strong club background, having worked at both the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton and at Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables. He also worked four years at The Boca Raton Resort & Club as director of food & beverage. John T. O’Brien, CCM, of the International Chapter-Bermuda, has been promoted to executive director of the Ariel Sands Beach Club. Plans are under way for Ariel Sands to be razed and a new, $150 million resort to be built. Ken Hamrick returned to Metairie Country Club in August as general manager. Hamrick started at Metairie in 1980 as a dishwasher. He worked in various positions at the club over a 22-year span and left in 2002 as clubhouse manager to accept his first general manager position. After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast region, Metarie CC took a huge hit and was closed for 13 months. In December 2006, the membership approved an $18 million tear-down and rebuild, and Hamrick was asked to return, where he is fulfilling his dream of being the club’s general manager.
