Club Management - January/February 2008 - (Page 58) designation. Our process currently requires that members “register” for the program as a conscious decision to pursue their designation. We currently have a total of 503 members in Canada, 400 of which are eligible to participate in the program. Of that number, more than 120 have committed to pursuing their designation, and the numbers are growing steadily. This year, two clubs actually indicated a preference for those individuals who either had or were actively pursuing their CCM designation in their position postings. CSCM sincerely appreciates all the support we receive from CMAA with the implementation of this program. Our professional development programming is designed to support the certification program and the development of competencies in professional club management. While drawing on the pool of instructors from CMAA on a variety of topics initially, CSCM is gradually developing our own pool of qualified instructors for CMI courses held throughout the year. At this point, our members travel to the United States to attend the Business Management Institute courses required within the program. Our members value the opportunity to network with CMAA colleagues, which is part of the ongoing learning process. In addition to CMI courses and the annual national conference, CSCM offers a range of professional development opportunities and resources for our members that now includes region- al seminars, education sessions through our branches and annual national food and beverage conferences. A resource library is built into our Web site at www. cscm.org, and we publish a quarterly professional magazine entitled Club Manager Quarterly, which has grown from 24 to 32 pages per issue over the past year. Subscriptions are available by contacting the CSCM National Office at national@ cscm.org. Hiring Smart Another tool available to our members is one that is particularly important at a time when many of our clubs are experiencing serious challenges with their supply of labour for positions that range from basic servers to senior management positions. A new program developed by McKinley Solutions, one of our corporate partners, provides an online “hiring smart” program that is much more than an online recruitment tool. It’s designed to assist club managers and supervisors in fi nding the right people in an efficient and cost-effective manner through an online interview and selection process designed by HR experts. The program is also an education resource for managers and supervisors in clubs through the Web site at www.clubjobs.ca. Play Golf With more than 70 percent of our members employed in golf clubs, growing the game of golf in Canada is an important initiative. CSCM has been an active participant in an organization called the National Allied Golf Associations (NAGA) and as such, participated in the launch of the PLAY GOLF initiative in Canada last year. PLAY GOLF has now launched the Industry Section of its Web site at www.playgolf.org, aimed at the 100,000-plus individuals who work in the golf industry. The site will include information on “growing the game” programs, research on the state of the golf industry in Canada, research on golf consumers and non-golfers, links to other grow the game sites and most importantly, a catalogue of industry best practices that have been successful in growing the game. The site also contains information on the various PLAY GOLF fundraising initiatives. Today, the volume of information, advancements in technology, consumer awareness and expectations, and other factors affecting the delivery of services to club members and CSCM members make for very challenging times for today and tomorrow. We can look back on the past 50 years with pride and look forward to the next 50 years with excitement and the confidence that CSCM will continue to grow and mature as a professional society responsive to the changing needs of its members. ❚❘ Look for a special feature on 2010 Olympic CEO John Furlong, a former club manager and current CSCM member, in the next issue of Club Management.
