Club Management - March/April 2008 - (Page 18) to you if the person will be driving for the club. If you’re hiring an accountant, run a pre-employment credit check on him. If he can’t manage his own money, do you really want him managing yours? There are a lot of other ancillary searches, including violent offender registry searches, workers’ compensation searches, civil records, drug screening and education and employment verifications. You should talk with your screening professional about designing a program that works best for your club. What to Look for in a Screening Company When it comes to fi nding a company to work with, there are several factors to consider. You have to fi nd a company that makes you feel comfortable. After all, you will be sending it very sensitive information. You also want to ask the company to send you either a sample report or to run a couple of free searches for you so that you can familiarize yourself with its process and get a fi rsthand look at how thorough its searches are. Join the Club If you ask it to run a few free searches for you, make sure you send it information on someone for whom you already have results. That way, you can check its report against what you already know. Ask the company if it is a member of the NAPBS. Most reputable companies are. The easiest way to fi nd a member of NAPBS is to go to www.NAPBS.com, where there is a link you can use to fi nd a backgroundscreening company in your area. Make sure you ask a lot of questions. Ask the company about its online security measures, how you submit your requests, how it returns your results and the process it uses for ensuring accuracy. Ask if it has a contract. If it doesn’t, it should at least have a service agreement that basically says it is going to abide by the FCRA and that it assumes you are going to do the same. Find out what other resources the company offers. Does it have a glossary of terms? How about downloadable release forms? Check to see if it has downloadable pre-adverse action letters and adverse action letters. In order to be compliant, you’ll need all of these. What are its identifiers to make sure it has the right person? Are all of its searches done in real time, or does it rely on databases? If you decide to run a database search, ask the company to send you a search description that details everything that is covered and where the data originated. All of these things are very important to ensure that you are minimizing your risk to the best of your ability right from the start. Remember, check them before they cost you. ❚❘ About the author Kevin Conrad is president of Complete Security Investigations (CSI), one of the premier professional background-screening firms in the Southwest.
