Woodbridge Country Club in Danbury, Connecticut, became the 10th recipient of the Distinguished Club Award at the Connecticut State Golf Association’s 108th Annual Meeting held at Ridgewood Country Club. The CSGA Distinguished Club Award is based on four major criteria: That the club has continually supported and advanced the game of golf; the club has served as a model of commitment to other Connecticut golf clubs; the club has consistently supported amateur golf through club-sponsored activities, hosting state competitions and member participation in CSGA events; and the club has consistently provided extraordinary service to the CSGA by encouraging volunteers, providing leadership personnel and hosting meetings, seminars and special events. Christmas in New York Comes to Atlanta Athletic Club No city embraces the holiday season quite like New York. Last year, the Atlanta Athletic Club brought Christmas in the Big Apple to Atlanta for the annual holiday event. The halls of the club were transformed into the streets of New York, with authentic cuisine, entertainment and shopping around every corner. The event spanned two nights. As guests stepped out of their cars and onto the red carpet, they were met by two New York “newsies.” “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” they yelled as they handed guests the evening program that resembled a copy of The New York Times. The melodies of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” filled the air as guests walked through the front doors held by doormen in authentic top hats and tails. Upon entering the club, it was clear they had been transported to the streets of New York. A stop at FAO Schwarz allowed children to create their very own stuffed teddy bear or animal as a memento of their trip to the Big Apple. A mock-up Rockefeller Center made a great venue for family portraits by the celebrated Christmas tree. A stop at the street vendors allowed guests a mini-taste of traditional New York fare – pretzels, hot dogs and roasted chestnuts. After their whirlwind through New York, guests made their way to the Radio City Ballroom for New York delicacies such as Waldorf Astoria salad, Chinatown dim sum, carved New York strip and Long Island duckling. The grand finale was a performance by AAC’s own version of the Rockettes. The event, in its second year, was again a hit with members. MARCH/APRIL 2008 • 37
