Club Management - March/April 2008 - (Page 39) Global Outreach CMAE Offers Fellowship, Education to Neighbors and Beyond By Jerry Kilby, CEO Club Managers Association of Europe ixty-eight delegates from 12 different countries assembled from November 1-5 at The Old Course Hotel, St. Andrews, for the fifth BMI International conference, the third in St. Andrews. Those who had been to BMI International in the past labeled the 2007 conference as “perhaps the best yet” with a first-class educational program supplemented by excellent opportunities to network with other managers and colleagues from the club industry. Peter Lederer, managing director of the Gleneagles Hotel, got the conference off to a flying start with a thought-provoking and witty presentation, giving us insight into his leadership experience in the hospitality industry. His presentation was followed by great presentations on the recent Spa and Golf Academy developments in St. Andrews. The highlight of day two was undoubtedly the presentation by Alan MacGregor, general manager of the St. Andrews Links Trust, and his colleague “J.J.” Entertaining and educational – a perfect mix. S Other presentations included Whitney Reid and a very new dimension to “communications” by Jason Rudgely of Pitchblue International. Mike Leemhuis then gave us a presentation on leadership and moderated an industry panel that took questions from delegates. The club tour to the Crail Golfing Society was interrupted by a power cut, which did not prevent Club Manager David Roy and Dr. Paul Miller from giving delegates a unique insight into this 250-year-old club, the fourth-oldest golf club in the world. A tour of the magnificent Gleneagles Hotel followed the trip to Crail to finish off an educational experience with two very different clubs. No trip to St. Andrews would be complete without the chance to experience this most famous of Scottish links courses. The final day’s golf was blessed with bright sunshine, but a stiff breeze made the golf challenging. Management of the St. Andrews Links Trust and the Old Course Hotel made the conference memorable and enjoyable for all. CMAA Chief Executive Officer Jim Singerling and Academic Adviser Joe Perdue expressed their thanks to conference sponsor E-Z-GO and to all those who were involved in organizing the event. News From Around Europe We are very pleased to welcome five new club manager organizations into the CMAE family as affiliate organizations, and we particularly welcome more than 1,700 new affiliate members CMAE CEO Jerry Kilby; CMAA CEO Jim Singerling, CCM; CMAE President John McCormack; and Joe Perdue, CCM, CHE, enjoy the view from The Old Course Hotel.
