Club Management - May/June 2008 - (Page 15) Conference Education/ Pre-Conference Workshops One area of development for the IWS has been its involvement in creating a valuable educational wine experience in CMAA pre-conference and conference activities. In addition to wine industry experts, culinary experts and chefs have added to the food and wine experience. Wine luminaries have included Kathleen Heitz, Richard Sanford, Augustin Huneeus, Bartholomew Broadbent, Dr. Sue Hua Newton, Karen MacNeil, Joyce Sterling and Kevin Zraly. Featured high-profi le chefs include Alan Wong, Allen Susser and Edward Leonard, captain of the U.S. Culinary Olympic team. The IWS business session also provides the opportunity to test one’s personal wine knowledge with a written test followed by a sensory tasting, which pits the higher scorers of the written test in a taste off. Multiple wines are identified in a blind tasting by region, appellation, vintage and wine label. The IWS also recognizes efforts from members who create strong wine programs within their clubs. Criteria include wine list and wine-by-the-glass programs and special events to bring wine to the forefront at their respective clubs. In addition, education is spotlighted with the establishment of the Warren Arseneaux Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was created to honor Warren by offering a scholarship to a recipient who displays a passion for wine. The scholarship gives the winner an opportunity to attend the BMI Wine and Food Experience program at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. Conference Dinner One of the highlights of the World Conference is to enjoy a wine dinner with friends, associates and leaders in the wine industry. These formal dinners are an opportunity to experience fi ne dining at some of the best clubs in the country. The CMAA Wine Society Board of Directors. Previous sites have included Balboa Bay Yacht Club, The Pacific Union Club, The California Club, La Jolla Country Club, Country Club of New Orleans, Arnauds, Waialae Country Club, The Pacific Club, Plaza Club in Hawaii and Isleworth Country Club. Fundraising and the Bucky Award Since the early 1990s, the IWS has been active in growing the silent and live auctions at the World Conference, which may be a result of a chance meeting between Arseneaux and Paul Anthony, CCM, at one of the fi rst silent wine auctions. Anthony offered to chair the auction the following year and challenged chapters to compete for the most wine donated. “I wanted to see who might offer not only more wine, but wine that would add more value to the auction.” Thus came the Bucky Award, donated by the Wisconsin Badger Chapter (Bucky badger appears on their logo). To date, more than $400,000 has been raised to benefit The Club Foundation. Local Representation and First Offerings Great effort has been made to bring the IWS to the local level, and almost every CMAA chapter has a representative. That is how Grape Stompers started. Even though they are located near Wine Country in Southern California, the Grape Stompers are managers from clubs large and small, city club, yacht clubs and country clubs. According to Kirk Reese, “It gives us a good reason CMAA Wine Society Mission Statement To promote the knowledge and appreciation of wine by those in the club industry through education and fellowship, providing resources and funding for continuing wine education. to get together and enjoy camaradiere with wine to celebrate.” The Wine Society News offers local highlights, industry news and winery information. It is available online with other wine education offerings. Members receive Wine Enthusiast magazine as part of their dues and have first opportunity for wine workshops and IWS wine-related conference workshops. To paraphrase a modest Arseneaux, “Red Steger gave me an acorn and said, ‘Make a tree.’” Arseneaux gave credit to Kathi Driggs, CMAA staff and numerous IWS boards for the society growing into what it is today. And, Warren, what a magnificent tree. ❚❘ About the author Tim Stein is general manager of the University Club of Milwaukee.
