It is up to the general manager to set that tone and create the social architecture for success. those rationales with those involved will help maintain your integrity. Dictator vs. Coach: There is no special leadership involved in assigning work, prodding for more production or discharging those who are unsatisfactory. The real test of leadership is in leading workers toward improvement through coaching, counseling and training. Arrogance vs. Self-Confidence: There is a fine line between these two. Selfconfident people tend to attract others while arrogance pushes people away. Arrogant people don’t care, and self-confident people do. They want to know how you are doing and are willing to share a part of themselves with you. Regardless of what you may think, we are all human. We have all failed, succeeded and stumbled along the way to where we are. Are you arrogant or self-confident? Ask yourself this: Do people tell you what you want to hear and offer empty flattery, or do they share openly with you? In this politically charged world, do people feel the need to bolster you in order to gain your recognition and support? The self-confident person builds trustworthy rapport and real respect. The Team Hiring Right: Part of an employee’s success depends on hiring the right person for the right job. This is no simple task. To make the search easier, I recommend sitting down with those people who are performing at or above your expectations and ask them what it takes to do the job and what skills they feel are most important. This little practice gains you three points. One, you have enlisted the frontline in the hiring process. Two, you have let them know that you are watching them and that they have earned your trust.
