Club Management - May/June 2008 - (Page 9) President’s Message Unlocking Time gins to emerge, and our spirits lift in anticipation of new seasons. In short, our environments and our attitudes are “unlocked” from their seasonal storage, and new opportunities emerge and take form. Peter’s observation was that no matter where we live, there is an element of seasonality that gives birth to renewal of efforts that are already in play, as well as anticipation of new ventures. All of this takes place in our personal and professional lives, and it is undeniably exciting. As I think about what we do as club professionals, I can’t help being drawn into the ebb and flow of creative efforts that infuse our interaction with our families, communities and clubs. Whenever I speak with other managers, I am constantly in awe of the energy and creativity that is reflected in their personal and professional lives. We often say that some of our best ideas are “stolen” from our fellow managers, and I’m as guilty as the rest of you when it comes to this pilferage. No matter what situation or innovation we are trying to address, our professional community represents a resource bank that is rich with input that can be used to meet our needs. One of our greatest characteristics is our willingness to share and contribute to each other’s success. With that in mind, I would like to make a request of all of you. As you move through your seasonal patterns and reach your times of “unlocking,” I hope you will consider sharing your innovation and efforts with the rest of us. We have wonderful vehicles available to us for this sharing that include our printed and online CMAA newsletters, as well as Club Management magazine. These ideas could be related to community and/or charitable efforts or meeting challenges within your club operating environment. The possibilities for creative and synergetic opportunities are endless, and the interaction within our CMAA community is always deeply rewarding. Outsiders to our profession often remark on the openness, willingness to share, and deep sense of caring that is characteristic of our industry segment. These are the product of our “unlocking times,” and they are the stories that need to be told. ❚❘ T he president of my high school class, Peter V. Fossel, was for many years the editor-in-chief of Blair & Ketchum’s Country Journal magazine. For obvious reasons, I used to enjoy reading his column, “RFD,” in each issue. One of his most memorable observations had to do with “unlocking time.” Unlocking time refers to that time in winter climates when the transition from winter to spring fi nally takes hold, and winter fi nally releases its grip. The ice on lakes and rivers thaws and breaks up, the frost leaves the earth and new growth be- Peter Homberg, CCM No matter what situation or innovation we are trying to address, our professional community represents a resource bank that is rich with input that can be used to meet our needs.
