Club Management - September/October 2007 - (Page 40) Feature EI Survey Says Insights into private club leaders’ emotional intelligence, social skills and stress management skills Who Participated in the Phase II Study? The Club Managers Association of America COO/GM members were again surveyed for the phase II research in 2006. In addition, we included private club board and committee volunteer leaders. The focus of this article is on the results we gathered from the 592 COOs/GMs who completed our survey. The demographics of the COOs/GMs were as follows: • The majority (89.6%) were male. • The largest percentage (40.2%) was in the 46 to 55 age group. • The largest percentage (45.8%) had earned a four-year baccalaureate degree. • Most of the clubs represented were member-owned (81.3%) and were golf/country clubs (77.9%). • On average, the GMs/COOs had 19.3 years of experience in the club industry and 13.3 years as a COO/GM in the club industry. The phase II study showed our EI model to be consistent and stable over time, as well as being reliable and valid. These attributes are what researchers like in a model. Emotional Intelligence Results Our EI model has three dimensions. IN is the ability to sense, lead, and use one’s own emotions. OUT is the ability to be aware of, relate to, and understand others’ emotions. RELATIONSHIPS is the ability to integrate your emotional experiences with your own thoughts and actions while interacting with others. The critical importance of relationships in the private club industry cannot be overstated, as these relationships extend to members, staff, volunteer boards and committee leaders, guests of members, distributors and the community. The top IN, OUT and RELATIONSHIPS result for each dimension is presented in Table 1 (page 41). In each dimension, ©iStockphoto.com/Lise Gagne By Ronald F. Cichy, Ph.D. James B. Singerling, CCM, CEC Jaemin Cha, Ph.D. Seung Hyun Kim, M.S. and Ann Doré n our 2005 study of private club chief operating officers/general managers, we defined emotional intelligence (EI) as a set of abilities or capabilities that an individual uses to understand, perceive and manage their emotions and others’ emotions. Our EI model was first tested and validated in 2005, then again validated in our phase II research in 2006. In 2006, we confirmed the three dimensions of EI: IN, OUT, and RELATIONSHIPS. 40 • CLUB MANAGEMENT I iStockphoto.com/Lise
