Municipal Monitor - May/June 2008 - (Page 19) Developing TREND © Opsdog/Dreamstime.com Communication is essential during largescale projects By Lucie Grys arge-scale development is a hot topic and municipalities, both big and small, are partnering with the government and private sector to develop and expand their communities. Partnerships between developers and municipalities can, at times, be tense and difficult to manage. The key to success is for each interested group to express their goals, motivations and expectations from the start of any development project. Ensuring that all involved are driven towards the same outcome is essential. By working co-operatively with government funding bodies and private investors municipalities can benefit, bringing more opportunities to both residents and visitors. A major obstacle in the development process is mapping out the various government granting bodies and knowing which funds are available to a municipality. Whether the type of development in question is building a conference centre, enhancing telecommunications, creating affordable housing or converting industrial land into parkland, managing the expectations of private investors is crucial. The government, through various ministries and grant programs, has implemented a number of strategies to renew Ontario. When you add private investors to the mix, the drive to turn a profit can, in some cases, impede the original purpose of the project. Working co-operatively with both municipal, provincial and in some instances, federal partners, helps ensure adequate infrastructure for today and tomorrow. municipal MONITOR · 19 L May/June 2008
