Municipal Monitor - May/June 2008 - (Page 3) The Future of Ontario’s Infrastructure As an Ontario municipality you know that some of the highest population growth rates and the most troubling infrastructure deficits in Canada are found in Ontario. The municipal infrastructure gap, currently estimated at $60 billion, is growing by $2 billion per year. According to a recent report on civil infrastructure, on average, more than 72 percent of Ontario’s infrastructure was more than 40 years old and another 41 percent was more than 80 years old. It is estimated that we have already used 79% of our infrastructure’s life expectancy. This is alarming—and all the more so for municipalities growing as fast as those in Ontario. What’s more, the majority of this deficit falls to local governments to manage. Is your municipality ready? More than ever within the last decade Ontario municipalities have felt the pressure of more stringent regulations in maintaining infrastructure. Be they accounting-based regulations such as those introduced by Canadian Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) or operational-based such as the new drinking water legislation introduced by the Province of Ontario, these may require entirely new ways of managing and investing in municipal infrastructure. You can be ready. And Wardrop can help you. Infrastructure People, Passion, Performance.
