STATE DIRECTOR & CONFERENCE CHAIR MESSAGES In Your Hands Are the Keys to Your Future Success! By Barbara Hagan, SPHR-CA 2012 State Director The 24th Annual Michigan Council of SHRM (MISHRM) Human Resources State Conference will provide you with the opportunity to improve your knowledge of the human resources profession, update your knowledge of current and proposed legislation that may personally affect you and the company you work for, build and improve your skills and competencies, and network with HR professionals from across the state. There is even time for fun—join your HR colleagues for the opening kick-off event on Wednesday evening! If you currently hold the PHR, SPHR or GPHR certification, this conference provides a bounty of recertification credits. If you are not certified, you will be able to speak with members of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), as well as many certified professionals who will share with you the value of attaining these credentials that demonstrate mastery of the HR profession. In addition to the many sessions available at the conference, conference sponsors and exhibitors will share a wide variety of the latest products and services that may add value to your organization. You will have the opportunity to view product demonstrations that cover talent acquisition, talent management, total reward programs aimed at retaining your key talent, HRIS systems and more—all under one roof—in an easy-to-navigate format. Please accept this as my personal invitation to join me and other professionals from across the state on Wednesday, October 10, through Friday, October 12, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan. Shewach, SPHR Program Chair, 2012 MISHRM Conference Welcome to the 2012 Michigan Council of SHRM State Conference hosted by Detroit SHRM (formerly HRAGD). As your conference chair, I want to tell you about the executive committee that has planned your conference and tell you the process we went through to choose the 2012 MISHRM State Conference theme. The majority of the executive committee members are made up of Detroit SHRM Board Chairs and I am a past president of Detroit SHRM and current director of Communications and Technology for MISHRM. We did a bit of brainstorming and came up with “going back to college,” and the importance that education plays in our ability to do our jobs—the way networking helps us to grow and learn and remembering the fun we had in college! We have lots of things planned, even a tailgate party. The committee has been hard at work planning this conference for the past two years and we are so excited to welcome you and share all of the conference details with you. We want to help you make this the best conference experience it can be; please take the time to read through the conference materials, network at every opportunity, reach out to the exhibitors/sponsors and take the time to get to know them. Feel free to ask conference committee members questions and don’t hesitate to ask the Volunteer Ambassadors for assistance—they are identified by ASK ME buttons! The theme of our conference, “The Difference Is U,” takes us back to college, with classes including career advancement, current events, executive development, HR strategy, HR technology and electives and roundtables. The pre-conference program is hosted by Clark Hill, PLC. Keynotes include Libby Sartain, former Chairman of the Board of SHRM: “Treating the Talent Pool as Consumers of Work,” Bill Taylor, Fast Company: “Business as if People Mattered: A Practically Radical Approach to HR,” and Kim Worthy, Wayne County: “Leading with Lofty Ethical Standards.” We are providing strategic, general and global HRCI credits and want you to take advantage of all the conference has to offer! Welcome—The Difference is U! 2012 MISHRM State Conference • Oct. 10-12 Registration online only at 5
