No, not another political scandal or rumour—without a doubt, it’s the sexy new Ottawa Convention Centre (OCC) emerging downtown next to the iconic Rideau Canal. “The industry has been excited about the new OCC for years,” says Noel Buckley, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “But since last fall when the glass panels started going up on the building, the whole city has started to buzz.” Thanks in no small part to the partnership between 24 ME TING • MARCH | APRIL 2011 Ottawa Tourism and the Ottawa Convention Centre, anticipation is also building among the meeting planning community as the grand opening of the new facility— scheduled for April 13, 2011—approaches. Promoting the new centre, known as Canada’s Meeting Place, has been the focus of both Ottawa Tourism’s and the OCC’s sales staff since the new facility was announced in 2008.
