Compass - Winter 2008 - (Page 3) message from our president The journey’s far from over but the y standard response to those who ask, “How’s it going as president, Pierre?” is, “It’s like a long board ride on a big wave!” For example, my travels to the WEC in Montreal and the PEC in Houston were truly unforgettable. In November of ’07, I was invited to Cancun for a program titled Meeting Place Caribbean. I was the guest speaker at a newly constructed conference center at the allinclusive Marina El Cid Resort near the Riviera Maya. Whoever said, “It’s cold at the top,” hasn’t been to Mexico in winter. While I’m on the subject…I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the fabulous job Annabel Tomlinson is doing promoting our upcoming four-day cruise to Cabo May 8-12. M With the help of Lori Goldspeil at Carnival Cruise Lines, Annabel has put together an itinerary that will be enjoyed by the fi rst-time cruiser as well by the experienced “Cruise Rat” like me. As a matter of fact, I’ll be taking my wife and kids, so I hope those of you with families will follow suit. This edition of the Compass focuses mainly on meetings at sea, and the opportunities that abound for those who choose cruising versus land-based destinations. I fi rst became involved with the cruise industry back in the ‘90s when I was contracted to produce an infomercial for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL). I shot footage aboard many of RCCL’s fleet of ships including the inaugural sailing of the Voyager of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. As a planner, I’ve held meetings at sea on Disney, Holland America and Royal Caribbean ships, and I’ve visited ports from British Columbia to Bermuda. experience, thus far, has been more than one could ever ask for. Read on and bon voyage! Pierre Charmasson SDMPI Chapter President 2007/2008 Compass is published quarterly in October, January, April and July.
