to make empirical adjustments to those models to fit the real world. The test track gives us the opportunity to both calibrate the models and validate the performance with regard to rutting and cracking. We are also able to directly compare different types of mixes and/or additives to see which is the best. The track also provides a quick link between field performance and lab properties which will pay big dividends in the future by allowing us to better judge mix qualities in the lab and eliminate costly premature pavement failures. without sacrificing any pavement performance. NCAT hopes to be able to provide good information so that people can make smart decisions about RAP for the future. HMAT: I understand you are doing some research on warm-mix asphalt. West: Yes, the research on warm mix is another area that is exciting to be working on. There are a number of warm-mix technologies that need to be evaluated with respect to performance in the lab and the field. We also need to get a handle on how to assess and quantify the potential benefits: reduced emissions, reduced energy to produce the mix, improved compactability. It’s going to be interesting to see how far warmmix technologies go. HMAT “NCAT hopes to provide good information so that people can make smart decisions about RAP in the future.” HMAT: What are some of the key projects that NCAT is working on? West: For several years now we have been helping to validate the performance prediction models in the Mechanistic-Empirical Guide. We’re continuing to evaluate modified asphalt additives and mix characteristics to hone in on mixes that are more durable and rut resistant. We’ve made some big strides in improving the durability of open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixes, which not only provide drainability and enhanced safety, but we’re also learning about how to make these types of surfaces quieter. We’re also looking at ways to optimize high-RAP [reclaimed asphalt pavement] mixes. Most of the agencies in the country are fine with 15-20 percent RAP in mixes. We need to demonstrate that RAP percentages can be increased When asphalt has to get there hot, it has to be Flow Boy.
