Big Creek Teams with TxDOT continued The project required Big Creek crews to mill 1.0 inches of the old road before restoring the highway during night paving operations. The five-mile long project involved rehabilitating three lanes of traffic in each direction, plus inside and outside shoulders. This stretch of I-35 is an important highway that begins at the Mexican border, and connects San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas Big Creek’s asphalt plant near Waco, Texas, provided both the PFC and the CAM mixes for the I-35 project. Situated on 187 acres, the two-year-old plant is located at the company’s quarry. Big Creek crews have landscaped the area by planting some 60 trees on the site. The project is not yet scheduled. Big Creek’s crew at the plant and on the road found the mix relatively easy to produce and pave, resulting in good smoothness readings. Obtaining the specified aggregate was another story. The local materials – various limestones and limestone gravels – were not hard enough to meet the requirements for the mix. The company was able to find granite screenings in Marble Falls, Texas, and river gravel from Cameron, Texas. “These materials were hard enough to stand up to the severe specifications placed on them,” said Miller. “Our team showed a high commitment to quality – from the lab people, to the crew at the plant, to the paving team.
