Top-Notch Teams continued Finalist: Lindy Paving, New Castle, Pa. Lindy Paving was limited to nighttime and weekend work when it performed accelerated concrete patching, joint repair, and Superpave overlay work on the mainline and shoulder areas of I-79 in western Pennsylvania. “The coordination required to perform all the work was the biggest challenge,” said Dan Ganoe, operations manager. “We only had a small window—7 p.m. to 6 a.m.—to set trafﬁc, get the equipment on the road, pave, get the equipment back off and open to trafﬁc for the morning commute.” The job originally included 6.1 miles of interstate plus six bridges. When it became clear that four ramps along the way needed work as well, Lindy completed this additional work (which required about 8,000 tons of HMA) in the same paving season. The project’s quality came from the attention to details, said Ganoe. “We put a lot of focus on this job, trying to get the best ride we could by planning our paving to provide us the best opportunity to get the best job possible. After each shift we evaluated our performance and made necessary adjustments to the equipment and how we were setting up.” That allowed the company to pave end to end without stopping, for the most part, on every lift. Lindy Paving made several suggestions to improve the project, such as combining the leveling and binder courses into one 19-mm course. The contractor also used a heavy-duty membrane seal over the existing concrete roadway’s longitudinal joint and a notched wedge for paving of the wearing course. “Our crews and our people always put a tremendous amount of effort into ﬁguring out the most efﬁcient and effective way to perform our work.
