Ecological Award Winners: Environmentally Sound, Neighborhood Friendly By Mary Lou Jay For the award winners in NAPA’s 2007 Ecological Award competition, sponsored by Roads & Bridges magazine, operating plants in an environmentally friendly way isn’t optional. It’s simply the only way to do business. “For us, it’s just the way it has evolved over the years,” said Thomas J. Earle, operations manager of the Walter R. Earle Corp., whose Jackson, N.J., plant was an award winner. Most of the environmental improvements the company has made were not required by any law or regulation at the time they were installed, he added. “But if there was something new that came out that was better, whether it would save us money or make the facility a cleaner operation or less intrusive on our neighbors or our employees, we just did it.” A similar philosophy is evident in each of the winners’ and ﬁnalists’ stories that follow. Lakeside Industries Port Angeles, Wash. 2007 NAPA ECOLOGICAL COMPETITION FOR AN EXISTING FACILITY Winner: Walter R. Earle Corp., Jackson Facility, Jackson, N.J. The Walter R. Earle Corp. is one of the few permitted industrial facilities in the Pinelands national preserve in New Jersey. “Our location places this facility under regulations Walter R. Earle Corp. connects with the community by sponsoring a Thanksgiving Day food drive. and scrutiny unseen anywhere else in the country. We are proud to say that we maintain a stellar record,” said Earle. The plant includes silencers for noise reduction and drum insulation for fuel savings and noise reduction.
