All of the dust is returned to the mix. This year, in conjunction with the Alabama Cooperative Extension, APAC-Southeast began giving tours of its facilities to high school students. In addition, it is ready to help out when there’s an event or activity that can improve the community. “But it’s not about what we do; it’s about the employees knowing that their company is trying to make things better for everyone in this community,” said R. Glenn Phillips, the company’s vice presidentDothan area manager. 2007 NAPA ECOLOGICAL COMPETITION FOR A NEW FACILITY Winner: Des Moines Asphalt and Paving Co. Inc., Plant #4, Des Moines, Iowa Des Moines Asphalt and Paving Co. built its new plant on a site that has housed an HMA facility for 30 years. Although the company didn’t have to seek many regulatory approvals—it was simply replacing one plant with another—it took a proactive approach to gain community support for the new facility. “We sought involvement from the city of Johnston from the very beginning,” said Greg Kinser, vice president and operations manager. The company held meetings with city planning and zoning ofﬁcials and pubic hearings where residents could express their opinions. “It is a true testament to our environmental stewardship over the years that we faced only a few minor concerns,” Kinser continues. “We immediately put them to rest by showing city ofﬁcials our proposed layout and how we would operate in an efﬁcient and environmentally responsible manner.” The city ﬁre chief was concerned about access to water for ﬁghting possible ﬁres at the site.
