Supervisors must complete this course which includes a ﬁnal written test based on Milestone’s safety handbook. In order to maintain this certiﬁcation, the supervisor must meet two goals during the calendar year: 1) no recordable injuries, and 2) no at-fault property damage claims. When these goals are met, the supervisors receive a certiﬁcate, incentive bonus, and hard hat sticker which designates them as a Certiﬁed Safety Supervisor. Supervisors who fail to meet the required goals lose their opportunity for an incentive and must complete the course again. The Certiﬁed Safety Supervisor program also gives employees control over the safety of their work environment. Since developing the Certiﬁed Safety Supervisor program in 2006, Milestone Contractors has seen its safety record improve, with a signiﬁcant decrease in the severity of incidents. explained emergency plant shutdown procedures, the ex company is putting into practice what it preaches. Each year, the company’s plant operators, safety personnel, key employees, and sometimes outside safety experts perform an extensive safety assessment of each of the company’s 11 asphalt facilities. The emergency plant shutdown procedures program grew out of these meetings. The company’s safety and asphalt operations team put the program into operation. They identiﬁed the controls essential for operation of plant systems, then asked each senior asphalt plant operator to create a set of instructions clearly describing how to safely, promptly, and effectively shut down all pressurized oil systems and related electrical controls. The instructions were collected and combined with a layout of each facility, printed on a piece of paper, then posted at a number of conspicuous locations throughout the facility. In the event of an emergency, employees have clear, understandable procedures to follow that will help minimize any damage to people, the plant, or the surrounding areas. Fred Weber employees review the procedures each year during the yearly testing of equipment. When company employees are cross-trained for different jobs, part of that training includes instruction in emergency plant shutdown procedures. “The safety of our employees and our surrounding neighbors is of paramount importance to Fred Weber Inc.,” said Roger L.
