The company decided to use online training to give employees access to safety information in the ofﬁce or at home. Lakeside worked with Pavia Systems, a company which has partnered with NAPA in developing online training programs speciﬁcally for the asphalt paving industry. Lakeside now requires all new hires to complete an online safety orientation/company history program prior to working at a job site. “It is a self-guided, online training course that can be completed in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how quickly they go through it,” said Blair. “The online training courses are highly visual and interactive, which helps engage employees and results in better retention of the information.” The program includes a tracking system so managers can run reports to see who has completed the necessary training. The company is in the process of rolling out ﬁve additional safety training courses on topics including hearing loss prevention, work zone safety, ﬂagging safety, hot-mix asphalt paving, and dump truck exchange and transport safety. The online courses will be required for some positions but will also be available for others who simply want to increase their safety awareness, Blair said. “For example, all of our ﬂaggers will go through the ﬂagging course, but they might also want to go through the truck driver safety course in order to better understand what’s going on in the work zone.” Long-time employees assisted with the orientation/safety program when Blair reviewed it with them before rollout.
