Modules can be presented in any order, depending on what the company or supervisor thinks is the most relevant to the work activities. The training program is available in CD or booklet and also has a laminated ﬂip-chart instructor manual ideal for use in a safety instruction or for a safety chat on the back of a pickup truck just prior to starting the day’s work. The program is visually appealing to trainees with colorful, easy-to-understand illustrations. For example, in the module on working outdoors, there are clear photos of what skin cancer looks like – vital information to people who spend long hours in the sun. Copies of the CD and printed materials are available from NAPA. The materials can also be downloaded in English, Spanish, and Portuguese at NAPA’s Web site, www.hotmix.org. HMAT T he National Workzone Safety Information Clearinghouse reports that from 2000 to 2005 approximately 1,000 people have lost their lives each year in work zones. The Roadway Safety Training Program (Version 8.0) is an effort to change those statistics by helping workers understand the potential dangers of being in a work zone and taking the proper precautions to preserve their safety. The training program was developed through a consortium of organizations including NAPA, the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund (part of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, or LIUNA), the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). This consortium effort is also underpinned by a formal alliance with OSHA, the FHWA, Associated General Contractors (AGC), and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The training program covers 13 key aspects of construction work.
