Black MBA - Spring 2008 - (Page 3) Black MBA Magazine Spring 2008 “Passion, Purpose and Power” From the President & CEO | Barbara L. Thomas W hat are you passionate about? What really excites you to perform your best – as well as feel your best – and look forward to even more of the same? Isn’t that what we should focus on? By being totally committed to our endeavors, we can produce our best work and secure feel-good rewards. Passion is one of the traits I tell people to focus on in both their professional and personal lives. Two other traits make up a strong triangle that symbolizes how people can excel: Purpose and Power. Together, these 3 P’s comprise an unbeatable trio for a better you. which will bring about the results you seek. On a personal note, I’ve challenged my 14-year-old granddaughter to master five languages and study the cultures in which they are spoken by the time she graduates high school. This is a difficult task but will be immensely rewarding for her. By having these rare talents, she will be able to set herself apart and have a better understanding of the world around her. The three of these traits combined can afford us remarkable results. By infusing ourselves with passion, power and purpose, we can produce our very best. I believe in the power of the individual, and we all have the capabilities and tools to bring about meaningful change. And when many individuals join together in the name of a common purpose, truly remarkable changes can begin to take shape. These three important aspects represent a great deal in people’s lives. Our work, outlook, attitude, mindset, health, well-being and relationships make up our very essence. If we are neglecting any of these categories, it could pull us down and bring about terrible results. But at the same time, shouldn’t we be striving to improve them? Not just settling for the status quo, but continuously pushing harder and reaching higher. This is what I think about when looking over the 3 P’s. It reminds me of the very best we can offer: excelling at the work place, volunteering to help those in need, making sure those less fortunate get the care they require, improving communities and ensuring a better tomorrow. I am proud of the membership we have in the NBMBAA and the relationships we’ve cultivated. It is my hope to see all of us prosper and grow in both our professional and personal lives. By keeping the 3 P’s in mind, I envision wonderful things happening for our people – but only those who will take the action to make the change. By being proactive and positively impacting those around us, we will experience the joys of seeing our efforts pay off. The ultimate reward will be a path we create and a walk we will take in a life full of passion, purpose and power. mba BlackMBA • Spring 2008 3 Passion – We must always be passionate about our next opportunity. It is my firm belief that passion brings about the most meaningful results. By doing what you love and loving what you do, you can bring about extraordinary outcomes as work will seem less like “work.” Instead of “watching the clock” and waiting to hit the door, you may seem more likely to “race the clock” in order to get all of your worthwhile tasks accomplished. Purpose – By having a purpose behind our efforts, we will have a roadmap to guide and a meaningful pursuit to chase. Reaching ever higher is a healthy mindset and one with very beneficial results. To accomplish makes us feel good and can result in extraordinary achievements. By clearly stating what your purpose is and pursuing it with passion, you are well on your way to the life you desire. Power – By empowering ourselves to reach new heights, we will set ourselves up for major successes down the road. Whatever you can do to empower yourself, rest assured that it is time well spent
