Black MBA - Spring 2008 - (Page 34) FEATURE The New Executive Search companies to hotel chains to the retail trade. Many firms reckon that they have pushed re-engineering and automation as hard as they can. Now they must raise productivity by managing talent better.” And there are a limited number of managers with those skills. “Most of our clients are looking for folks at the top of their came,” says Logan, the Atlanta-based recruiter. “We call them A-players. When you’re looking for those A-players, the list is not very long.” Ironically, the most attractive executives are the ones already happily employed. “We’re looking for someone with a strong leadership profi le,” Logan states. “They have ability, and its showing; they stand out, and they are accomplished, and they are respected in their company. They are not looking for opportunities. They are doing a great job where they are. For them, it would be a challenge to leave the organization. We’re looking for folks who are happy, engaged and productive in their current roles.” To attract such talent, companies have to be flexible in drawing up a job description. “I work at the top and when you’re working at the top, there are no jobs that fit a person,” says Herbert Smith, the Cleveland recruiter. “There are people that can be fitted into an organization because they bring so much to the table that they have a have lunch with them. It’s really good to reach out and begin to develop those kinds of relationships.” She continues, “We tend to call potential candidates when we have opportunities. That’s when we begin to develop the relationship. For talent out there that we may not be aware of, it’s really helpful when they reach out. If you want to be noticed, get your name out there.” INCREASING ROLE FOR RECRUITERS The role of professional recruiters is likely to increase in a global society that increasingly features a fierce competition for talent. The combination of globalization and aging populations in the United States and Europe, resulting in a smaller pool of younger workers, will necessitate hiring more people with broad management skills. The Economist reports that “Managers not only need to deal with lots of different sorts of people, but also [have] to manage workers in different countries and often across different functions. That means even more competition for people with up-to-date management skills. “Obsession with talent is no longer confined to blue-chip companies such as Goldman Sachs and General Electric [Co.]. It can be found everywhere in the corporate world, from credit card THINK Think about it. of the possibilities. Undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs. State-of-the-art facilities. Internationally recognized faculty. Innovative learning environment. The possibilities for career development, advancement, and personal growth are endless.
