Precious Robinson Marriott Corporation Scholarship Claremont Graduate University, Drucker School of Management When Precious Robinson completes her graduate coursework at the Drucker School of Management, her double major in business and industrial organizational psychology will boost the Delaware native to a total of five degrees. Robinson did her undergraduate coursework at the University of Georgia, and she earned a second bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Robinson, a Los Angeles-based career counselor at the University of California, Los Angeles, says earning an MBA in industrial organizational psychology will help further her career goals, which include teaching people to use psychology to tackle business issues and helping them maximize time and space. Her career background mostly entails working in academia. However, she plans to use her MBA to transition into the business sector – at least for a while – with longterm goals that include returning to academia and retiring as a university instructor. Recently engaged, Robinson considers the Marriott Corporation Scholarship a blessing. And she was equally excited about the 2007 NBMBAA® Annual Conference held in Orlando. Referring to the conference networking opportunities, workshops and speakers, she adds, “Everywhere you looked there were educated, beautiful Black people. I was awed and humbled.“ The two additional Marriott scholars were Harvard University students. James Rollins National Black MBA Association® General Scholarship, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, Robert Half, Wal-Mart and Volkswagen: University of South Carolina, Moore School of Business James Rollins, a 31-year-old native of Virginia Beach, Va., is homing in on a spring graduation date after two years of studying marketing and global management. With a solid internship under his belt, the University of South Carolina graduate student says he expects to turn the mass media [industry] on its head. Rollins is motivated by the potential for [media] growth he witnessed last summer during a fourmonth internship in Mexico City at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. He worked with the conglomerate’s Latin American sales group. “I’ve enjoyed every bit [MBA program and internship],” he says. Rollins says he knew, even throughout five years spent in the U.S. Navy, he would eventually return to school. Now, the Virginia Tech graduate is learning how to enter foreign markets, using resources ranging from culture to currency. Additionally, he calls the scholarship a “godsend.” mba Tuesday Tibbs PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. Scholarship Carnegie Mellon University, Tepper School of Business Tuesday Tibbs credits her PNC scholarship for a smooth first year in graduate business school. A native of Baltimore, Md., Tibbs is keeping busy at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to her studies, Tibbs holds an elected student government position. And she recently returned from a two-week study-abroad program in China. There, students met with other MBA scholars worldwide. “It was a great experience,” says Tibbs, who will consider working in China once she completes graduate studies. Tibbs studied business administration and accounting at Hampton University. The 22-year-old decided to go straight to graduate school, after gaining work experience during an internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Tibbs said she’s grateful for the scholarship, which includes a NBMBAA® lifetime membership. “You guys won’t be getting rid of me,” she laughs. BlackMBA • Spring 2008 45
