While there, representatives from all five partner schools, which in addition to UNC include China’s University of Hong Kong, RSM Erasmus University in the Netherlands, Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey and Fundação Getulio Vargas in Brazil, held discussions about South Africa’s role in the global economy. Their trip included visits to Alexandra Township, where OneMBA® representatives spoke with local business owners, and to the global energy company SASOL. – www.onemba.org MICHIGAN’S ONLY HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE FIGHTS SHUTDOWN Although it has no president or accreditation, which it lost last August, the Lewis College of Business in Detroit, Mich., has no plans of closing. The college, founded in 1928 as Michigan’s first historically Black college, recently created several new certificate programs to help boost enrollment, but had to postpone classes after winter break from Jan. 14 to Jan. 28 to launch these programs. Without accreditation, Lewis no longer has access to thousands of dollars of federal financial aid, but it is still eligible for financial aid from the state. Its four new certificate programs include entrepreneurial business, medical billing, medical assisting and administrative assisting. In 2006, the school reported having 278 students, but recently, enrollment has dropped. Lewis laid off its interim president and currently is searching for a new president, who will be responsible for earning back the school’s accreditation, lessening its reliance on financial aid and raising enrollment by 250 students in two years. Lewis lost its accreditation over questions about whether it was offering “quality education.” – www.detnews.com HISTORICALLY BLACK SORORITY CELEBRATES 100 YEARS Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the first Greek-lettered sorority established for and by Black college women, celebrated its 100th anniversary Jan. 15 in Washington, D.C. Leading the ceremony were Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Congresswoman Sheila JacksonLee, who announced that a commemoration of AKA’s anniversary would be placed in both the House’s and Senate’s Congressional Record. AKA, which Ethel Hedgeman Lyle began with only nine other students at Howard University in 1908, now consists of more than 200,000 women in 975 U.S. and international chapters. – Hudson Valley Press mba BLACK MBA The Official Magazine of the National Black MBA Association The National Black MBA Association® represents the most powerful network of individuals and partners dedicated to increasing corporate diversity, access to capital and intellectual advancement.
