Black MBA - Spring 2008 - (Page 51) as many people assume. “You have every type of people in the government,” he says. “The government is looking at best practices and how it can better serve the public. So a lot of the agencies have to be forwardthinking in [their hiring] and in what they’re doing.” To further explain, Dortch refers to the U.S. Postal Service and its need to compete with corporations such as UPS and DHL. “The post office has to be entrepreneurial and market-driven,” he says. “It needs skills that MBAs have. So there’s creative room for the MBA, but you may not pull the same long hours demanded in a corporate environment.” Given the current war against terrorism, Dortch suggests MBAs also consider agencies such as the U.S. Department of Treasury, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. These departments are ranked in the top 30 “Best Places to Work in the Even with sign-on bonuses and pay for performance, government salaries can’t stand up against those offered in certain industries such as banking and consulting. Federal Government 2007” survey, which was compiled from more than 221,000 federal government employee responses across nearly 300 agencies and departments. RECRUITMENT ON THE UPSWING? Networker extraordinaire George C. Fraser often talks about a person’s network determining his or her net worth, which is why students who network at on-campus events and attend professional gatherings or career fairs may discover MBA-targeted government work opportunities and training programs that aren’t widely advertised. For instance, the online career Web site www.vault.com has information about federal government career options for MBAs interested in international development, which is a field traditionally heavily dominated by economists. Because the federal government has no formal recruitment efforts established, without networking, this career opportunity could slip under an MBA’s radar. In general, ma ny gover n ment recruitment efforts include traditional tactics, such as posting openings with MBA student career offices and at general advertising venues. Dortch believes that being proactive is a smart way to learn more about government postings.
