Black MBA - Summer 2008 - (Page 32) FEATURE H. Naylor Fitzhugh position. “His passion was [teaching] students,” Ido says. “He retired after 30-something years as a teacher, which is unheard of in academia. Most people want to become a department chair and dean, but he only wanted to teach.” Ido says that both her father and mother promoted education in the home, and she remembers dinnertime rituals fraught with frequent trips to the encyclopedia. Fitzhugh was an all-but-dissertation Ph.D. candidate who attended Columbia University’s business school. Ido holds a doctorate degree in cognitive psychology and works at the University of Pittsburgh. Her brother H. Naylor Fitzhugh Jr. is a physician who recently relocated from Northern California to the Charlotte, NC, area, and her Washington, D.C.-based brother, Richard, is a consultant in the architectural industry. Their mother, Thelma, planned to become a dentist, but opted to instead raise her children full-time. Ido regularly wears a head wrap and Naylor dons a cross on his necklace – together, they talk about religion, and Ido mentions her parents’ instructions on “authentic and purposeful living.” “I’m Muslim,” she says. “My brother is agnostic, and my other brother is Catholic. And my parents were OK with that. They wanted us to be thoughtful about our lives… It’s up to you to decide how you want to live it. [Fitzhugh’s] parents wanted him to become a doctor. He realized it wasn’t about satisfying his parents; it was about finding what he wanted to do. And I guess it was just the example that affected us… knowing that he chose to honor his truth.” NBMBAA President & CEO, Barbara L. Thomas, and Dean Dr. Barron Harvey with the portrait of H. Naylor Fitzhugh in the Fitzhugh Lobby of the Howard University School of Business. Expect More Opportunities.
