Black MBA - Summer 2008 - (Page 36) FEATURE H. Naylor Fitzhugh he was a team leader, he recalls, the team had to present a case study to Lilly executives. “It was the first case study they were participating in and they were in front of people who work in that industry and deal with it from day to day, so they really couldn’t go in there with nothing,” Smith says. “They had to put some thought into it. When you participate in such activities, you definitely have a confidence increase.” Another benefit of the 21 CAP program, Smith says, is that the students develop a relationship with the companies and many later get jobs with those companies. Smith begins work as a financial analyst for Lilly this July. The relationships companies have with Howard are mutually beneficial, says Michael Santini, a managing director with Merrill Lynch who serves on the business school’s Board of Visitors. Having minority employees “is an important factor as we think about diversity, from our standpoint,” says Santini. “But the reason we go to Howard is because the quality of their students is as competitive as other students from the top business schools.” Howard’s business school, which has been in existence since 1970, has long been ranked among the top business schools for minority job candidates. The Wall Street Journal in 2007 ranked Howard third in this respect, below Columbia and above Harvard, according to Dean Sirjue, assistant dean of the Howard School of Business. Rankings by outsiders are not universally popular – in fact, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School refused to cooperate with the latest Business Week rankings, asserting that its methodology was flawed. (Business Week ranked Wharton anyway – first.) But schools like Howard that have not traditionally been at the top have nothing to lose – and a lot to gain. “It reinforces what we knew, and it challenges us to continue to pursue excellence,” Harvey says. A perception of quality helps breed success in attracting better students and landing better jobs for graduates, Howard administrators say. “Other potential recruiters and students look at our program and say, ‘You know, they have a good program. We ought to see if they have some students who can take advantage of the opportunities we have here.’” Harvey says. mba “Other potential recruiters and students look at our program and say, ‘You know, they have a good program.
