EDUCATION On Campus FIRST BLACK FEMALE DEAN AT HARVARD Evelynn Hammonds, an African American, was named dean of the undergraduate division of Harvard University in April, becoming the first African-American female dean of the college. Hammonds, whose term as dean began June 1, is Harvard University’s senior vice provost for faculty development and diversity and the Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of Science and of African and African American Studies in Harvard’s arts and sciences department. Hammonds previously taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before coming to Harvard in 2002. – www.harvard.edu AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE OPENS AT USC The University of South Carolina (USC) celebrated in April the opening of its new Institute for African American Research. The institute was created to further research already being conducted by the university’s African American Studies Program, which focuses on better understanding race and Black life in South Carolina, the Southeast, the United States and the overall African Diaspora. The university hopes that the institute will serve as a formal invitation to academic scholars across the nation to visit USC and engage in conversations about race with its faculty. Specifically, the institute plans to sponsor new and ongoing research projects, fund post-doctoral fellowships, host conferences and symposiums and assist in publications about race-related subjects. – www.sc.edu AFRICAN AMERICAN MAKES RECORD DONATION TO UNIVERSITY The University of Southern California (USC) received a $25 million donation in April from Verna B. Dauterive, an African American. This marks the largest donation to an American university from an African-American alumnus. Dauterive, 85, made the donation in the name of her late husband, Peter. Dauterive, now retired, worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 62 years. She received master’s and Ph.D. degrees in education from USC and her husband earned an MBA from the university. The couple met as students in USC’s Doheny Library shortly after World War II. Later in his life, Peter became executive vice president of Broadway Savings and Loan, and then president of Founders Savings and Loan. In these roles, he helped provide mortgages to innercity communities. The record donation is one of many that Dauterive has made to the university. In 1985, she funded the establishment of a scholarship fund for minority students seeking Ph.D.s in education. To earn her Ph.D., Dauterive wrote a dissertation on the legal aspects of school desegregation in the United States. The dissertation, according to USC, is still in use by its law school today. – www.usc.edu FINANCIALLY-OVERLOOKED HBCUs MAKE EFFORTS TO BOOST FUNDING Overall, Black colleges and universities continue to receive less funding than white universities, according to a new report by Michigan State University’s Dr. James T. Minor, an assistant professor of higher education. Minor studied the funding patterns of universities in Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama and Louisiana, and discovered that funding from state governments and government research agencies at these schools is significantly higher at predominately white universities. Minor reported that two predominantly white universities in North Carolina, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, collect more state funding than all five of the historically Black universities in North Carolina combined. Further, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University are awarded $15,700 per student, compared to $7,800 per student at historically Black universities. Minor found similar funding inconsistencies in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. Of special concern was the National Science Foundation’s research funding history; six predominately white universities are currently receiving more research grants than 79 historically Black universities combined. In related news, the Associated Press reported that historically Black colleges and universities such as the Atlanta-based Morehouse College are working to attract funding by revamping their Internet outreach services.
