Black MBA - Summer 2008 - (Page 81) LEADERSHIP | Jeff Friday | Keith Wyche | Fail to Succeed | NBMBAA Chapters Jeff Friday: Building Bridges MBA Uses Business and Creativity to Change Images of Blacks on Screen By Lynette Holloway AS JEFF FRIDAY grew up in the 1970s, the only images of African Americans that he recalls seeing on television were of the Evans family trying to make ends meet while living in the projects on “Good Times” and the up-fromthe-ghetto Jeffersons on “The Jeffersons.” Let’s not forget about the images on the silver screen duringthe ’70s--the golden age of blaxploitation films, which highlighted the lives of pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers. The young Friday wanted to change that. While aware of the hardships faced by Blacks, he knew there was another story to tell. “Growing up, I was always asking my mom why Blacks had problems on TV,’” Friday recalls of his youth in Newark, N.J. ”Newark was a depressed city, but I was exposed to other things because my dad lived in Greenwich Village (New York), where I was exposed to a wealth of art and culture. I very much wanted to see that translated on television and in movie theaters.” And so he did.
