Black MBA - Fall 2008 - (Page 72) SPEAKER SHOWCASE Tuesday, Sept. 16 ROLAND MARTIN Nationally Syndicated Columnist, Author Town Hall Meeting: The Disappearing Black Middle Class? Roland S. Martin is a nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, he is the author of Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith, and Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America; and is a commentator for TV One Cable Network, and also host of The Roland S. Martin Show on WVONAM/1690 in Chicago. Wednesday, Sept. 17 TOM PETERS Partner, Co-Founder, Organization Effectiveness “business’s best friend and worst nightmare.” When Peters and Bob Waterman produced “In Search of Excellence” more than 25 years ago, they effectively introduced the world of business to the notion of excellence per se, a state of mind and daily practice not normally associated with enterprise, and an inspiring and profitable aspiration at a time when America’s competitiveness was under full-blown assault. Peters followed “Search” with well over a dozen additional international bestsellers. Among them were A Passion for Excellence (with Nancy Austin), Thriving on Chaos, Liberation Management (acclaimed as the “Management Book of the Decade” for the ’90s) and the provocative, colorful Re-imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age. Peters and his wife, Susan Sargent, now live on a 1,600-acre working farm “always under construction” in Vermont. He is a civil engineering graduate of Cornell and earned an MBA and doctorate at Stanford. In the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970, he made two deployments to Vietnam and “survived a tour in the Pentagon.” He was a White House drugabuse advisor from 1973 to 74, and then worked at McKinsey & Co. from 1974 to 1981, becoming a partner and cofounder of the now gargantuan Organization Effectiveness practice in 1979. Thursday, Sept. 18 LILLIAN LINCOLN LAMBERT First African-American Woman to receive an MBA from Harvard NBMBAA Membership Breakfast Born on a farm off a dirt road in the segregated South, Lillian Lincoln Lambert gives new meaning to the aphorism, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” Although she wore burlap bag dresses to school, she sensed in her bones that there had to be a better life beyond the farm. She gutted out menial jobs as a maid and typist in New York City and Washington, D.C., before realizing that the journey was internal and that education was her ticket to a new world. The first African-American woman to graduate from Harvard Business School in 1969, Lambert’s story is that of a pioneering woman who broke down racial and social barriers and became a successful entrepreneur – achieving the American dream on her own terms. For 25 years, Lambert was president and CEO of Centennial One Inc., a building maintenance company she founded in 1976 on a few thousand dollars operating out of her garage. With initial sales of $150,000 and 20 parttime workers, Lambert grew the company to $20 million in sales, with more than 1,200 employees, before selling it in 2001. Lambert received a bachelor’s in business administration from Howard Leadership Institute Plenary Fortune magazine called Tom Peters the “Uber-guru” of management (he doesn’t know what that means, either, but admits “it sounds pretty good”) and compares him to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman and H.L. Mencken. BusinessWeek’s take on his “unconventional views” led it to label him 72 BlackMBA • Fall 2008 • www.nbmbaa.org http://www.nbmbaa.org
