Black MBA - Winter 2007/2008 - (Page 40) RELEVANCE Staying Current, Creative and Credible THURSDAY Thursday’s conference featured dynamic speakers exploring relevance and greatness with personal tales of overcoming adversity. At the “Morning of Motivation” Glenn “Doc” Rivers, NBA veteran and coach of the Boston Celtics, inspired attendees with his story of rising to the NBA by staying true to his goals and committing to success. “Too many people think about success as results, but they don’t think about the process,” Rivers said. “You have to see success before you can achieve it.” Kevin Carroll, author of Rules of the Red Rubber Ball, joined Rivers, and shared the story of how finding a red rubber ball helped him overcome a difficult childhood and rise to where he wanted to be – setting his own rules and helping others enjoy play. Victory, he noted, comes to those who are willing to do the “lonely work of a champion.” Thursday’s luncheon speaker, Susan Taylor, senior editorial director, Essence Magazine, shared the importance of giving back, encouraging philanthropy and community connectivity within the Black community, especially with regard to mentoring and nurturing youth. “A new world is on the way and Black people are the ones who are going to give birth to it. You must polish your God-given gifts to help give back more to the community, like our elders,” Taylor said. 1 2 3 4 40 BlackMBA • Winter 2007/2008 • www.nbmbaa.org 2008 bb http://www.nbmbaa.org
