Phillips welcomed new members with phone calls and made an attempt to get everyone involved in chapter activities. “You get into it what you put into it,” he said. “I would just say to them, ‘Here’s what I need for you to do.’ People are looking for ways to get involved.” His work paid off when Kansas City was named Chapter of the Year in 2002. The NBMBAA® is an extraordinary networking and advancement organization for African American professionals – but the group is not for everyone, said Phillips. “If you’re looking for a good time, join a fraternity,” he said. “If you’re looking to make a difference in your professional life, join the Black MBAs.” mba Mema Ayi is a Chicago-based writer. when he came into a leadership role in the organization, his mission was to keep his members focused on changing technology. The chapter was struggling when he joined in 1999 and Phillips jumped right in to change things. Just months after he became a member, Phillips was elected vice president of administration. As a former IT project manager at Sprint, Phillips was well-positioned to bring emerging technology to the chapter.
