CONGRATULATIONS to the 2007 NBMBAA® Chapters of the Year: Columbus, Westchester-Greater Connecticut and Washington, D.C. Oyauma Garrison, President of the Columbus Chapter, was honored as the 2007 MBA of the Year at the NBMBAA® Annual Conference September in Orlando, Fla. In October, Garrison was recognized before the Ohio General Assembly for his honor, and the legislature also recognized the Columbus chapter for its Chapter of the Year honor. Irvin Ashford Jr., manager of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) program for Comerica Bank’s Texas Market and Dallas Chapter member, was recently named to the 2007 U.S. delegate class of the British-American Project. The project brings together a select group of individuals who are well known in their fields to debate issues of interest to both countries. Meetings alternate between the U.S. and Britain. The latest meeting took place in Newcastle, England, in November. This year Ashford also received the Comerica Chairman’s Outstanding Achievement Award. Ashford has a master’s in public affairs from the University of Texas and an MBA from the University of Dallas. Ceehl C. Phillips, Business Integration Manager, Privacy and Personal Data Security (P2DS) for Ford Motor Company, was recently accepted into the company’s exclusive Information Technology Leadership Program. Phillips was also recently awarded a commendation medal from the U.S. Air Force for exemplary service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves where for the past nine years he has 68 BlackMBA • Winter 2007/2008 • www.nbmbaa.org lead teams in a range of IT projects, from networks and systems administration to application development. Phillips received his MBA with a concentration in management information systems from the University of Michigan. Jennifer Perkins, Director of Education/Leaders of Tomorrow® (LOT) for the Twin Cities Chapter, has been appointed Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Ecolab. Perkins, who has been at Ecolab for seven years, had served as Director, Human Resources Global Research & Development and Engineering. Steffan Johnson, President of the Twin Cities Chapter, was featured in a September Minneapolis Star-Tribune article highlighting his entrepreneurial and volunteer work. In the article, Johnson, CEO of his own medical supply start-up, Stratus Medical Group, was recognized by one of his professors from the MBA program at the University of St. Thomas for serving as a role model. Mitchell Watkins was inducted into the University of Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame during the university’s homecoming weekend in October. Watkins received his MBA from the university in 1965 and his undergraduate degree in 1960. As an undergraduate, Watkins was a top basketball scorer, also competed in track events. Watkins was one of the few Blacks who received MBAs from the university in the mid-1960s. While there, he spearheaded the creation of new fellowship programs for Blacks, and actively engaged in recruitment efforts. As a result of his efforts, an extremely large number of Blacks have subsequently been able to obtain graduate business degrees. mba http://www.nbmbaa.org
