Aside from a visit to her family’s native country, Haiti, the 15-year-old from Norwalk, Conn., had never ventured beyond the U.S. Now she was on her way to the United Kingdom for a whirlwind visit to London, England. “All I knew about English people was from what I saw in the movies or read,” said Romeus. “I knew that most of them were white, they spoke with an accent and in the movies they were always drinking tea.” Having relied on media and history books to vaguely inform her of the U.S.’ parent nation, Romeus realized that, like most students, she possessed a personal knowledge of foreign nations that was close to nonexistent. Fortunately for her, England can now be added to her list of experiences in a wider world. For Romeus, her travel abroad was part of a week-long trip organized by NBMBAA’s Leaders of Tomorrow® (LOT) program, which in October transported 14 BlackMBA • Winter 2007/2008 85
