TECHNOLOGY TOOLBOX BroadVu Creates Mobile, Digital File System on an iPad BY DEBRA WOOD OVERSEEING A PROJECT HAS BECOME EASIER and more efficient for contractors and clients using BroadVu, a real-time document and digital fi le-sharing app for mobile devices. “It’s beneficial to keep the entire project team in sync,” says Rob Blalock, vice president and division manager of the Georgia Mixed Use Division of Brasfield & Gorrie in Kennesaw, Ga., a member of Georgia Branch, AGC, who adds that he expects everyone in construction will be using this technology within the next few years. “Everyone is working off the same documents,” Blalock says. “We’re able to take the old off and put the new ones on.” Brasfield & Gorrie uploads drawings, pricing information, spreadsheets, threedimensional models, photos, videos, notes and other documents associated with a project. Then with a click, BroadVu syncs and downloads everything to the team’s mobile devices. The BroadVu home screen lets users immediately view what is new and a webcam of the project. “BroadVu allows you to communicate the highlights, the big picture, but also the details if they want to see that,” says John Wills, president of BroadVu of Marietta, Ga. The software compresses very large fi les, so they do not take up much space on the tablet. Because the data downpads to the iPad or Android device, the information is available whether the user has Internet access or not. “It almost works like your computer, stored in the memory,” says Blalock, who now leaves his laptop at the office and relies on an iPad and BroadVu in the field. “The next time you open the app, it automatically searches for the latest stuff and downloads it.” That way everyone involved on the team—the architect, subcontractors and owner—can view the latest version of the data or image appropriate to their needs. “Access is based on a security level, which is one of the nicest things about it,” Blalock says. “The document control and managing distribution and updating are really beneficial.” Contractors or owners can customize and create the structure, so the information is organized in a way that makes sense for them, Wills says. Within each section, they can create subcategories to organize data, photos, drawings and other information. BroadVu creates a visual thumbnail of the document, which Blalock says makes it easier to fi nd information. Users also can create favorites for fast access and email documents to other people from BroadVu. Wills says owners can set up access to models, 3D renderings, floor plans and other marketing information and allow potential tenants, buyers or media to peruse. “People like interaction, tapping on things and pinching and zooming,” Wills says. “When they click on a model, they BroadVu creates thumbnail images of each fi le, allowing users to quickly fi nd what they are looking for. Photo courtesy of BroadVu. can rotate and zoom in and see what the building will look like in an interesting way.” BroadVu costs $2,500 per project and $350 per month, which allows unlimited users. The contractor pays the cost and the subcontractors and other project members can access for free, print or view on the iPad. “The nice thing about BroadVu is it allows so many more people on a project to see resources,” Wills says. “They don’t have to open email, log onto a website. It’s all in one place.” BroadVu 732 Kennesaw Avenue, Suite 250 Marietta, GA 30060 866-542-7082 ◆ www.broad-vu.com 66 constructor | JAN U ARY/ FEBRU ARY 2013 http://www.broad-vu.com http://www.naylornetwork.com/ngc-nxt/
