By sequestering this carbon dioxide and placing it into the built environment, Calera is proactively reducing the level of free carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. The nature of the process itself is highly proprietary, and covered by a multitude of intellectual property instruments. In general, though, the Calera process starts with waste C02 from sources such as coal-fired power plants or cement plants, and produces building materials which capture the CO2 inside the building material itself. Calera’s Carbon Capture SCMATM is a hydraulically cementitious material, which will be used as a supplementary cementitious material in the production of concrete. Los Gatos, a picturesque city in California’s Silicon Valley, is home to the corporate headquarters and principal laboratory of Calera. Additional process laboratories and a 200-acre pilot plant facility are situated at two locations along the Northern California coast.
